An ultrasound scan during pregnancy is now a standard procedure. Its purpose is to monitor the development of the baby and control the course of pregnancy.
It is recommended to have at least three scans during pregnancy: the first one between the 11th and 14th week of pregnancy, the second between 19th and 22th, and the third after 30th week of pregnancy (in accordance with medical indications such as: expecting twins, diabetes or high blood pressure). When diagnosed with pathology regarding the baby or placenta, the scans need to be more frequent.
Why is it worth to have a pregnancy scan?
The scan can detect some abnormalities of the baby, which allows for implementing of adequate medical procedures. Some malformations can be successfully treated while the baby is still in the womb. If, however, it is not possible, the medical personnel can prepare for the possibility of the baby needing special care when he's born.

2D pregnancy scan
It produces 2- dimensional images of what is happening inside the mothers and baby’s body. The scan shows baby’s gestation, growth, heartbeat, development and size. The procedure also allows to monitor baby’s development. The doctor can assess the size and shape of the individual body parts of the baby, his internal organs, the condition and location of the placenta, amniotic fluid volume. Thanks to the scan, it is also possible to detect visible congenital defects.
The ultrasound equipment used in our clinic – Voluson S6 has also the Doppler function which makes it possible to measure the blood flow in different parts of the baby's body, such as his umbilical cord, brain and heart. This helps to show whether he's getting all the oxygen and nutrients he needs via the placenta.
3D pregnancy scan
Voluson S6 is a high-technology equipment which, in addition to standard 2D imagery, allows for three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the baby image. Thanks to the 3D scan it is possible to see for the first time the baby’s skin rather than his insides. The parents, instead of seeing the blurred, grey outline, can observe the face and clear outline of the body of their unborn child. If the scan is carried out in the third trimester of the pregnancy, they can even spot the baby’s yawn or smile.
3D scan is also an important diagnostic tool because it enables to detect cleft lip, spina bifida or heart defects.
4D pregnancy scan
4D scan produces an image similar to the one in 3D, but instead of being static, it is observed in real time. It enables the doctor to monitor the movements of the baby, his heart rate, as well as, a lot of other information unavailable during standard scans. Thanks to the high technology of the equipment, the scan procedure helps to detect some features of the baby that can indicate diseases, for instance, genetic ones.
